Airbnb vs VRBO vs Booking.com: Photo Dimensions Quick Reference

Each platform crops photos differently. Airbnb wants 3:2, VRBO requires 16:9 landscape, Booking.com displays 16:9 but recommends 4:3. Here's your cheat sheet.

Why Dimensions Matter More Than You Think

Every major booking platform displays your listing photos at different aspect ratios and resolutions. A photo that looks stunning on Airbnb may have its best elements cropped away on VRBO. A perfectly composed Booking.com image might appear stretched or letterboxed on another platform. Understanding these differences is not optional if you list on multiple channels — it is essential for presenting your property at its best everywhere.

Airbnb Photo Specifications

Airbnb uses a 3:2 aspect ratio for displaying listing photos. The minimum resolution is 1024 by 683 pixels, but uploading higher resolution images is strongly recommended. File format should be JPEG, with a maximum file size of 30 megabytes per image. Airbnb recommends uploading between 20 and 30 or more photos for optimal search visibility.

Landscape orientation is strongly preferred. Airbnb's gallery layout is designed around horizontal images, and vertical photos will be cropped or letterboxed, losing visual impact. When shooting for Airbnb, frame every shot with the 3:2 crop in mind and keep your subject centered with a bit of breathing room on all sides.

VRBO Photo Specifications

VRBO is more prescriptive about its requirements. The platform uses a 16:9 landscape format, and landscape orientation is not just preferred — it is required. Minimum resolution is 1024 by 683 pixels, with an ideal upload size of 3840 by 2160 pixels for the sharpest results. Maximum file size is 20 megabytes, and VRBO recommends at least 25 photos for improved search visibility.

The 16:9 format is notably wider than Airbnb's 3:2, which means the top and bottom of your images will be cropped more aggressively. Rooms photographed with a standard 3:2 composition may lose headroom or floor detail when displayed on VRBO. Plan for this by shooting slightly wider than you think you need.

Booking.com Photo Specifications

Booking.com has its own approach. The minimum resolution is 2048 by 1080 pixels — higher than both Airbnb and VRBO — with an ideal upload size of 4000 by 3000 pixels. The platform recommends a 4:3 aspect ratio for uploads, but displays images in a 16:9 format on most listing pages. Maximum file size is 19 megabytes per image, and listings with 24 or more photos tend to rank higher in search results.

The gap between the recommended upload ratio (4:3) and the display ratio (16:9) means Booking.com is doing significant cropping on its end. Upload in 4:3 with your subject centered, knowing that the top and bottom portions may be trimmed in the display gallery.

The Cropping Problem

Here is where multi-platform listing gets tricky. A beautifully composed 3:2 photo on Airbnb — say, a bedroom shot where the ceiling details and plush rug are both visible — may lose both of those elements when auto-cropped to 16:9 on VRBO. The same image uploaded to Booking.com at 4:3 may show more vertical space than intended, revealing clutter or blank walls you had carefully cropped out.

The practical solution is to shoot at the highest resolution possible, compose with the widest crop (16:9) in mind, and then export platform-specific versions. Keep your subject in the center two-thirds of the frame, and avoid placing key visual elements at the very top or bottom of the image.

The Efficient Workflow

Rather than manually resizing every image three times, use a systematic approach. Shoot at maximum resolution, enhance the image once with professional-quality tools, then export platform-specific versions sized for each channel. This ensures consistent quality while respecting each platform's unique display requirements.
