You Don't Need Expensive Equipment

Modern devices — phones, tablets, even budget cameras — have sensors that rival older professional DSLRs. The difference between amateur and professional product photos isn't the device. It's the lighting, background, and consistency.

Here's how to build a complete product photography setup for under $200 that produces marketplace-ready images.

The Essential Equipment List

  • Any camera device: $0 (you already have one). Any phone from the last 3-4 years, a tablet, or a point-and-shoot camera works. The sensor quality is sufficient — what matters is everything else.
  • Tripod/phone mount: $15-$30. Eliminates camera shake entirely. Even a basic Amazon Basics tripod works.
  • White poster board sweep: $5-$10. Two sheets of white foam board — one flat, one curved up as a "sweep" background. Instant clean white background.
  • Bounce cards: $5. White foam board cut into smaller pieces to bounce light into shadow areas.
  • Softbox or ring light (optional): $30-$50. For when natural light isn't available or consistent.
  • Lightbox/photo tent (optional): $20-$40. Collapsible tent with built-in diffusion for small products (jewelry, cosmetics, small electronics).

Total: $45-$135 depending on what you already have.

Lighting: The #1 Factor

Lighting makes or breaks product photos. Here are three approaches from cheapest to most controlled:

Option 1: Window light (free). Position your setup next to a large window. Sheer curtains ($5) diffuse harsh sunlight into soft, even illumination. Best times: morning or late afternoon when light is warm but not harsh. Use a white bounce card opposite the window to fill shadows.

Option 2: Single softbox ($30-$50). Place it at a 45° angle to the product. Provides consistent light regardless of weather or time of day. Essential if you're shooting in the evening or in a room without large windows.

Option 3: Two-light setup ($60-$100). Main light at 45° plus a fill light at lower intensity on the opposite side. Gives you full control and minimal shadows. Best for products with texture or reflective surfaces.

Background Setup

For marketplace listings (especially Amazon), you need a clean white background. The simplest approach:

  • Place one white poster board flat on a table
  • Curve a second board up from the table to create a seamless "sweep" — no visible horizon line
  • Tape or prop the back board against a wall or box
  • The curve eliminates the harsh line where table meets wall

Shooting Tips

  • Use a timer or remote: Eliminates camera shake from tapping the shutter
  • Lock focus and exposure: On phones, tap-and-hold on the product to lock both
  • Shoot in the highest resolution available: You can always downsize but never upsize
  • Take more angles than you think you need: 8-12 per product gives you options
  • Clean your lens: Fingerprints are the most common cause of "hazy" product photos

When DIY Isn't Enough

DIY setups work well for getting the raw photo. But post-processing — color correction, background cleanup, consistent lighting across products — is where most sellers struggle. That's where AI enhancement bridges the gap between "good enough" and "professional."
